Configure the CodeRabbit VS Code extension to match your workflow preferences. For more information about using the extension, see Review local changes.
These instructions are specific to VS Code. If you’re using a VS Code-compatible editor like Cursor or Windsurf, the steps are similar but may require some adaptation.

Find the settings screen

1

Open CodeRabbit sidebar

Open the CodeRabbit activity bar/sidebar.
2

Click the settings icon

In the sidebar, click the gear-shaped icon on the top right (beside the logout icon).
You can also search for CodeRabbit: Settings in the command palette to open the settings directly.
The settings screen lists every CodeRabbit setting. You can also edit them in your settings.json file. The settings reference lists each setting key with its type, default, and allowed values.

Configure AI agent integration

The Agent Type setting (coderabbit.agentType) lets you choose how the extension responds when using the Fix with AI feature during code reviews.

Native

Prompts the AI agent associated with your IDE to apply the suggested fix.
Works with VS Code (using Copilot), Cursor, and Windsurf. For other IDEs, copies to clipboard.

Clipboard

Copies prompt text describing the suggested fix to your clipboard for manual use with your preferred AI agent.
For more information about the Fix with AI feature, see Request help from your AI coding agent.

Configure automatic review behavior

The Auto Review Mode setting (coderabbit.autoReviewMode) controls how the extension handles automatic code reviews after you make commits to your local Git repository.

Disabled

The extension doesn’t perform automatic code reviews.

Prompt

After every commit, displays a dialog asking if you’d like to perform a code review.

Auto

Always performs a review after every commit automatically.
For more information about this feature, see Automatically review local commits.

Choose the CodeRabbit region

The Account Region setting (coderabbit.accountRegion) controls which CodeRabbit Cloud region the extension connects to. Choose the region that matches the website you sign in to: us for app.coderabbit.ai, which is the default, or eu for app.eu.coderabbit.ai. Changing the setting connects the extension to that region; it doesn’t move your account. The earlier Region setting (coderabbit.region) is deprecated. A value saved there still applies until you set Account Region. If you configure Self Hosted URL, the extension connects to that URL instead of the selected CodeRabbit Cloud region.

Configure task startup

The Auto Start Task setting (coderabbit.autoStartTask) controls whether supported AI agents start working on the suggested fix automatically. This setting applies to supported agents such as Native in VS Code, Cline, Roo, and Kilo Code.

Use with self-hosted CodeRabbit

The Self Hosted URL setting (coderabbit.selfHostedUrl) is only used when you’re using a self-hosted instance of CodeRabbit. If you’re using the CodeRabbit Cloud service, you don’t need to configure this setting. Set this to the base URL of your CodeRabbit instance, such as https://coderabbit.yourcompany.com. When this value is configured, the extension connects directly to your server instead of the selected CodeRabbit Cloud region.
You will need to log in and log out of the extension after adding this value for the changes to take effect.

Settings reference

These are all the settings in version 0.23.0 of the extension, with the descriptions shown in the Settings editor. Earlier versions may not have every setting.

coderabbit.accountRegion

Choose the region where your CodeRabbit account is hosted. Match the website you use to sign in. Changing this setting connects the extension to that region; it does not move your account.

  • Untrusted workspaces: workspace values are ignored and only your user setting applies

coderabbit.completionNotifications

Other platforms and remote/web sessions use the IDE notification. macOS notification permissions and Focus settings control OS alert visibility.
  • Type: boolean
  • Default: false
  • Scope: Local user settings only

coderabbit.respectGitIgnore

Exclude ignored untracked files supplied by Git from local reviews. Tracked and staged files remain eligible even if they match ignore rules. Disabling this does not discover ignored files omitted by Git. Built-in file exclusions still apply.
  • Type: boolean
  • Default: true
  • Scope: User, remote, workspace, and folder settings

coderabbit.reviewCompletionSound

Play a short sound when a review completes. Requires the CodeRabbit panel to have been opened in this window. Playback depends on your editor’s audio permissions and system volume; blocked sounds are skipped.

  • Allowed values:
    • us
    • eu

Commands

Run these commands from the Command Palette: press Cmd+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux, then type CodeRabbit. Some commands appear only after you sign in. Use a command ID to assign a keyboard shortcut to that command. The table lists the commands in version 0.23.0 of the extension. Actions on a single review comment, such as Fix with AI, appear on the comment itself rather than in the Command Palette. See Working with review results.
